GIRLS COACHES
Head Coach – Alan Gibson brings 21 years of experience as a head girls basketball coach to Timnath High School. A retired English teacher who spent 34 years in the classroom, Coach Gibson spent 9 years leading the girls’ team at Lake Havasu High School in Arizona, before returning to Colorado and spending 12 years as the head coach at Berthoud High School.
Coach Gibson’s teams at both Lake Havasu and Berthoud qualified for the playoffs every year, with 8 trips to the Sweet 16, four trips to the Elite 8, and one appearance in the Final 4. During the 2024 season “Gibby” earned his 300th career coaching victory. Using a fast-paced approach and turning great defense into instant offense is always the main objective, but more importantly, Gibby wants four things to happen in every practice and game: work hard, have FUN!, get better, learn something new.
While his teams have been successful on the court, Gibby promotes and strives to provide a positive experience for all those involved with the girls’ basketball program and judges the program’s success accordingly. Building a connected, cohesive, cooperative sisterhood where everyone is included and accepted is a major pillar in his programs. Also of paramount importance is the building of leadership skills and the necessary qualities to be strong, assertive, self-advocating young women while learning and applying everything that goes into being an All-State teammate. He also looks forward to connecting and working with basketball girls at Timnath Middle School and the community’s three elementary schools.
In addition to basketball, Coach Gibson’s coaching background includes 13 years as head baseball coach at Roosevelt High School, and 10 years as head softball coach at Lake Havasu and Roosevelt. He also spent 10 years as a boys’ basketball assistant at Roosevelt.
Gibby grew up in Johnstown and graduated from Roosevelt High School before attending Otero Junior College for one year. He then transferred to CSU, where he played baseball and earned his bachelor’s degree in Technical Journalism. He then received English Education certification at UNC and then earned his master’s degree in Education from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.
Coach Gibson and Amy, his wife of 42 years, have two sons – Cam and Colton – two daughters-in-law – Jenna and Arielle – four grandchildren – Nelleigh, Leo, Theo, Cienna – and another grandchild due in June!
In his free time, Gibby delivers Meals on Wheels and reads with 1st graders. He also takes on and enjoys turfgrass management, mowing several lawns of family and friends. His number one recreational activity is pickleball, with a little golf on the side. Now, it’s time to focus on his new favorite team: Timnath Girls Basketball! Go Cubs!
